They're Doing across America What They Did within Christianity

The Trump movement's most revealing and characteristic instances – not its most important, nor most harsh, nor most threatening, nor stupidest, but perhaps its most illuminating – occurred earlier this fall. During the period of a few weeks, the American president began displaying all observers his plans for an ornate dance hall twice the size of the White House and subsequently started unilaterally ripping down the East Wing to erect it.

He has committed acts ten thousand times worse – the existing assessment of deaths from his cuts to foreign assistance is 600,000 and rising, and this week a study projected his fossil fuel policies would kill 1.3 million more. But nothing as definitional. No former leader would have dared – really, no previous leader would have imagined – independently wrecking significant portions of the executive mansion to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the direct cooperation of numerous the nation's most affluent, the majority of whom conduct transactions with federal agencies.

We transitioned from 'the gentle will obtain the Earth' into 'the meek shall die of cholera'

As confusing as it is to watch the leader attempt to overturn the old idea of democracy and replace it with its direct contrary, there is one large group of Americans who should not find it totally unfamiliar. This includes individuals like us – in older age cohorts almost a majority – who were educated as mainline Protestant Christians.

We have witnessed over the years as rightwing evangelical churches converted the Savior we were raised with into exactly the opposite of our understanding of him. At its most basic, they transformed an image of affection into a symbol of hostility who approves specifically the brutality that he condemned in the Gospel; this has happened more slowly, through multiple decades instead of months, however it is still unsettling in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.

A Harmful Christianity Gains Ground

So let me first describe the Christ from my childhood, as conceptually the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and since the quickly increasing segment among Americans may possess limited understanding regarding him as they consider themselves atheists or uncertain individuals or religiously unaffiliated. I have no problem with these various perspectives, nor with alternative spiritual paths; yet I maintain that contain precious wisdom of significant worth in the Christian story.

It is unquestionably definitely not the account of a powerful ruler appearing; rather, a baby is born to displaced parents in a garage, who need to rapidly escape to a different country to avoid undercover officers. The child matures in simple surroundings, an employed craftsman; his message is about love for other people, particularly for the impoverished – not merely emotional affection, but a concrete one, shown by providing food and protecting. Christ's response to violence is to offer the opposite cheek – not as a gesture of compliant endurance, but as a way to instruct the attacker; his method regarding offenses indicates that whenever someone steals your jacket you should give them your pullover too.

The evident and straightforward fact that the Jesus in biblical accounts calls for a form of extreme compassion concentrated on the poor has consistently rendered the Christian faith something of a scandalous religion: attractive to the general public, but owing to its natural unconventionality needing to be restrained. During the 1950s it was restrained through watering down – Protestantism was so widespread that it practically blessed current circumstances.

A Battle for the Highest Within Us

Hence I have become inspired to witness the determined opposition to Trump develop over the last twelve months. It has been substantial consolation to help build the campaign that has taken to the streets in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated citizens to turn out in significant amounts in interim political contests. We must have to persist with it, and in the same spirit, displaying national flags at every demonstration and requests to the finest aspects in US history.

We shall be interrogated ... about how you treated the foreigner? Did you receive him and welcome him or refuse?

America is best defended, essentially, by relationship to the best about American history, just as Christianity is best defended by reference to elements that cause it to be special and wonderful, specifically the model of Christ. In neither case does it mean acting as if the most negative regarding America and Christian faith never occurred; it signifies both modesty and belief, a combination that serious national faithful should embrace.
