Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes are granted the right to contest certain calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the protocol already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
